Five Centimeters Per Second

“Each minute felt like an eternity. With clear malice towards me, time continued to drift slowly forwards around me. I clenched my teeth tightly together and could do nothing but endure the pain and hold back my tears.”

Five Centimeters Per Second is a film about the relationship of Takaki and Akari and how distance gravely affected them. It chronicles the life of Takaki into three episodes, mainly on each episode, focusing on one part of his life. After watching it, I’ve concluded that this is a masterpiece from start to end. I’ve never watched an animated film that dedicated so much time into detail. The animation itself along with the scenes are just too beautiful. I can’t find the exact words to describe them actually, so I hope the pictures that I’ll post along with this blog will give you somewhat an idea of what I’m talking about.

The movie basically tackles the long distance relationship of the two protagonists, but as heavily used the concept of long distance relationships are, this movie portrayed the cliche with such emotion and subtle scenes that you wouldn’t care. Every moment was honest and heartfelt which was a rarity for animated movies. It’s hard depicting emotion through acting let alone voice overs only with some help from the scenery of the situation.

It is a romance story, but it’s not only that. There are a handful of symbolism and stellar imagery all throughout the film that would just take your breath away. Also, there were side stories as well that would just break your heart. It not only gives additional depth to the movie, but it gives more meaning to the main plot. Another noteworthy thing about the film is its dialogue. It’s in Japanese, but when translated into English, I still felt the weight of the words. Some were deep and were just ready to be quoted.

As I said before, this movie contains three parts, but despite having three parts, the movie’s length isn’t even above an hour. It was 55 minutes along with the ending song. Imagine that. In a short span of merely an hour, the director was able to create this film that touched the watchers’ hearts. I highly recommend to all my followers to watch this; because, it’s an hour well spent.

To give you an idea on how beautiful this film is, here are some screencaps from the movie. I didn’t make these picture and GIFs, so don’t give me credit for it.
