Looking for a way out
“How will we ever get out of this labyrinth of suffering?” -Alaska Young, Looking for Alaska
I spent most of the day reading Looking for Alaska. I don’t want to finish it yet, but so far, it’s wonderful, really wonderful, but no matter how beautiful the book may be, I really don’t want to finish it just yet. Maybe it’s because I’m scared on how it’ll turn out or scared of what answers it might show. The book really digs deep in my thoughts right now.
Towards the end, Alaska asked how will we ever get out of this labyrinth of suffering. Well, unconsciously, I answered this myself.
We don’t. We don’t get out of it. It’s as simple as that. Everyone experiences suffering, and it might pass for some time, but it will return. It will always return for more. If we get blinded by looking at the brighter side of life, we’ll always feel more hurt as we experience it again. Alaska and the others’ answers might be different than mine, but this is true in all ways. We don’t wake up one day and feel all perfect all throughout until our last breath.
Even up to when we’re an inch away from death, we’re suffering. There’s no way out, and I don’t want to give that acceptance inspirational crap. It’s our choice if we accept it or not, but regardless of what we decide, it’s still there, and nothing’s changed, so is there really a way out? I don’t know yet. As I finish this book, I also want to find out whether there is a way out. Fiction or not, we’re all looking for it anyway.
